Everyone understands gum (gums) care is the cornerstone of oral health. However, many people only do this because of their shiny white teeth, they forget the teeth and the bacteria hidden in the corners of the brush do not come.

You can imagine the tragedy of poor oral hygiene as a yellow smile - which can be easily overcome with a dentist's visit. But a lack of interest in the gums can lead to infections in the gums, connective tissue and alveolar bones. This is due to the accumulation of bacteria and plaque around the gums. If left untreated, it destroys the gum tissue and becomes very difficult to treat. But when the gums are damaged, they will not be able to keep the teeth.

But even more alarming, did you know that a gum infection (periodontitis) can also increase your risk of stroke by 3 times, and diabetes risk by 6 times?

One study has shown that gum disease is also a risk factor that triggers many other health problems. So if you are not careful, you will contribute to the development of heart disease in the future and increase your own risk of stroke.

Who is at risk?

All. Most people will have gum disease at some point in their lives. According to a 2003 Health Promotion Commission survey, 85% of adults in Singapore have problems with gums.

In addition, the sick people also put those around them at higher risk because this is an infection. It can spread between parents and children, between wives and husbands, and even between close friends. Pregnant women need to be especially cautious with oral health, gum disease increases the likelihood of preterm birth and low birth weight birth by 7-8 times.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

Gum disease is usually silent. At an early stage, you may not feel pain. However, you should be aware of the following 4 early symptoms:

1. Bleeding gums even when gently brushing teeth

2. Red and swollen gums

3. Receding gums

4. Breathing is often unpleasant.

Handling like?

- Brush your teeth at least 2 times / day

- Use floss

- Gargle salt water after eating

- Should take tartar periodically.

- Diet rich in vitamin C also helps strengthen the resistance of the gums.
